Sap Soon Running - Spring is Coming!

A sure sign of spring is the annual “Sap to Syrup” program held at County Farm Park. On Saturday, March 1st at 1:00 p.m., Washtenaw County Parks and Recreation Naturalist Faye Stoner will be demonstrating this fun process.

According to Faye, “The only places on planet Earth that have the right weather and enough of the right trees to make syrup commercially are northeastern North America and parts of the Midwest”. “Tapping” the trees for syrup usually starts in late February to early March due to the warmer days and colder nights. Any maple tree will produce the sap, “but sugar maples are really the best,” says Faye.

Pack up the family, dress for the weather, and learn how to identify and tap maple trees, then how to boil the sap into delicious maple syrup. Taste both the sap and the syrup. Join Faye for the opportunity to participate in an activity that dates back to Native American practices.
