Volunteers Honored for Work with Sheriff's Office

Sheriff Dan Minzey with Cynthia GaryThe Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is fortunate to benefit from the service of hundreds of citizen volunteers serving in many capacities. Neighborhood Watch Coordinators, Reserve Deputies, Christian volunteers, literacy support groups, substance abuse resistance coaches and the Sheriff’s Mounted Unit were among those honored at a dinner held Wednesday, January 23, 2008. This event was made possible by donations from many local businesses and organizations.

Special recognition was given to the family of the late Chaplain Ell Dudley, who served as jail chaplain for nearly twenty years until his recent death. Other notable awards went to Mr. Lacy Horne, named Corrections Volunteer of the Year for his dedicated service with the inmate population; business owner Pete Theocharakis, named Police Services Volunteer of the Year for his enthusiastic support in helping to defray start-up costs for the Sheriff’s Honor Guard Unit; and Assistant Chaplain Cynthia Gary, named Religious Volunteer of the Year for her facilitation of inmates’ religious needs and assisting in their transition process upon release from jail.

It is only through ‘volunteer-power’ that the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office is able to provide many programs and services vital to the citizens of Washtenaw County as well as jail inmates and their families. Sheriff Dan Minzey would like to publicly acknowledge all of these men and women who generously donate their time and talent to serve our community.
